A promising mature-ager out of the state league, Toby McQuilkin has already had a taste of the top level and is keen for more. The South Fremantle defender was a train-on player with West Coast and although he was overlooked, remains on the radar of recruiters having gone back and worked on some of his deficiencies. A lightly-built prospect, he was told to build size and improve his running, which he looks to have taken on board after topping WA's 2km time trial with an effort of 6:40.
McQuilkin broke into South Fremantle's notoriously strong League side in 2021, playing 16 games before bettering that effort with 18 this season. He averaged 23 disposals and seven marks for the Bulldogs, making his name in the number 42 as a half-back who intercepts and sets up play by foot. With consistent production and a good athletic base, he may be ready for his shot at 21-years-old.
In terms of what he does best, McQuilkin reads the play nicely and cuts off any errant opposition entries, peeling off his opponent to cut in before getting to work on the rebound. A steady and long kick, he favours his feet and can have that real two-way impact from behind the ball, suiting the way small-medium defenders play at AFL level of late.
