Xavier Bamert had the tall task of captaining the Sandringham Dragons in their pursuit of a fourth consecutive Coates Talent League premiership this year. It was a testament to the bullocking midfielder's leadership and consistent output that they made it to the big dance, arguably minus the depth of top-end talent available in previous Dragons sides.

Bamert is an imposing figure, broadly built and ready for senior footy. His power is palpable; he can blast penetrating passes off his left boot and crash in at any stoppage regardless of the opposition. And yet, the perception of him as a battering ram doesn’t undermine his work rate and intent to get to as many contests as possible - boasting elite running power.

The query on Bamert, like most big-bodied midfielders, is his upside and class. Players with mature frames tend to dominate against smaller junior bodies, but that is harder said than done at the senior level. Further to that, he can certainly add some polish to his kicking, but has the endurance, physical attributes, and versatility to make it at the next level.
