SNAPSHOT: “A high-impact utility who connects the lines with his outstanding running ability, decision making, and foot skills.” – Michael Alvaro
Zeke Uwland’s bottom-age campaign last year was better than most players’ top-age efforts. In fact, many could only dream of hitting the same heights. That’s why the Suns Academy prospect has been held in such high regard throughout 2025, despite missing much of it through injury.
The hard-running Queenslander came into the year with an already brimming medal collection. He was an Under 16 All-Australian in 2023 and backed it up as the only bottom-ager selected in the Under 18 side for 2024. On top of that was the esteemed Hunter Harrison Medal.
Uwland was duly selected in the AFL Academy and looked primed to dominate his draft year having spent time training with the senior Suns in preseason – alongside elder brother Bodhi. Unfortunately, what followed were repeat setbacks in the form of pelvis and back stress fractures.
Knowing he would miss most of the season as its eve approached, Uwland remained optimistic of making an impact post-championships. He followed through on that promise, returning to make four VFL appearances with the Suns and averaging 16.5 disposals per game.
In a draft crop arguably missing the same depth and star factor as previous editions, Uwland’s reputation held him in good esteem despite not being able to add to his stunning CV. Nonetheless, he remains one of the top prospects among several shining Suns.

IMPROVEMENTS:
- Acceleration
- Durability
Uwland is among the most well-rounded prospects you could ask for. He can do it all on the field, capable of playing on any line and perfectly suiting the modern brand of transition football. From his running ability, to lethal foot skills and shrewd decision making to match, he offers the complete package.
Not only is Uwland a hard runner, but also a smart one. He knows where to find the footy in all areas of the ground and can drive it forward with impetus. What's more, he sets himself apart by being able to win his own possession, but is well suited to a free-roaming outside style. You want the ball in his hands as much as possible.
Part of the reason for why Uwland is so readily fed by his teammates is his elite disposal. He takes a kick-first approach and can hit targets both long and short. Where his ball use becomes a weapon is when he can combine it with his running in chains of possession, or when he pulls off long-range passes to switch or advance the play.
His cannon of a left foot is also used to hit the scoreboard, which he has proven across every level. Uwland is an apt dual-sided kick too, although can work on trusting his right side more often. It's no real wonder why he favours his better foot, but sometimes runs himself into trouble when not taking the first option. That said, he has the smarts and agility to improvise exit plans.
Another area Uwland has been looking to enhance is his explosiveness. While covering the ground is no issue, he has been doing plenty of work on his acceleration in hopes of making his first five steps a threat. Combined with his ball use, it's something he hopes can help tear the opposition to shreds. It would also further close the gap on his comparison to Sydney star Errol Gulden.
There will also be question marks on Uwland's durability, though several young prospects have recovered from overuse injuries like his stress reactions. Once firmly established in the Suns' environment, his professionalism and work ethic will help him to get the best out of himself once again. With a clean run at it, he's as consistent as they come.
That bankability is part of the reason why Uwland is so highly rated. All other leading prospects this year have had a noticeable chink in their armour - Uwland's is that he wasn't available to play. When fit and firing, his production from week to week is top notch. The fact that he hardly wastes a touch, on top of accumulating so many of them, means his potential hurt factor is through the roof.

SUMMARY:
It’s hard to see a world where Uwland falls out of the top few picks, even despite missing much of the year through injury. There is a view by some that he may well still be the best player in the crop, but obviously being club-tied is somewhat of a drawback for whoever wields pick one – they’ll want to back their man. Expect an early bid, and for Uwland to hit the ground running in a familiar setting at People First Stadium. With a clean run, there’s no reason why he can’t be among the Rising Star favourites for 2026 and an AFL Fantasy king for years to come.
