IT has been the perfect start to the 2024/25 National Basketball League (NBL) fixture for Melbourne United, moving to 2-0 on the season after defeating the SEM Phoenix by 12 points at John Cain Arena on Thursday night.
Another installment of the Throwdown series between the two Melbourne-based sides brought plenty of anticipation, as evidenced by the sold out crowd. Both teams had high expectations for their respective campaigns, and had the talent to produced high quality performances, but Melbourne’s class shone through when it mattered most.
South East Melbourne Phoenix (84) def. by Melbourne United (96)
Despite the final result, it was actually the Phoenix that got off to the better start, showcasing the level of offensive power they recruited over the off-season. South East Melbourne’s biggest strength is its balance of scoring options, and it posted 28 points in the first quarter to lead by eight at the opening change, leaving United with work to do.
Melbourne’s response after quarter time was tremendous, locking down defensively to make life extremely difficult for the Phoenix in half court sets. United went on a crucial run on the eve of half time to take the lead at the main break, showing why Dean Vickerman is still one of the premier coaches in the NBL.
After being restricted to just 12 points in the second term, the Phoenix did improve in the third to ensure Melbourne did not run away with the game, and stayed within striking distance by ensuring the deficit was just six points at the final change.
Although the game was still up for grabs in the fourth quarter, United star Jack White was clinical down the stretch. The NBA Champion sealed the match with a clutch three-pointer and showed why United will be a massive threat to the championship this season, steering the team to a 12-point triumph to remain unbeaten. On the other hand, it leaves the Phoenix still searching for their first win, and in such an even landscape, a slow start may prove costly.
For United, it was again Matthew Dellavedova that was the star of the show, posting 18 points, five rebounds and 10 assists to continue a red-hot start to the season. He looks back to his best and has shown he is more than capable of putting Melbourne on his back.
White finished the game with 15 points and eight rebounds, while sharpshooting captain Chris Goulding was immense off the bench with 19 points and four triples, indicating his return to form after an interrupted preseason.
Although it was not the ideal result, the Phoenix were well-served by Matt Hurt (18 points), Jordan Hunter (17 points) and Derrick Walton Jr (17 points), showing just how many offensive options the team has.
