Boomers squad packed to the rafters with talented list
WITH the 2024 Paris Olympic Games just a few months away, the Australian Boomers announced their initial 22-player squad for the basketball component of the world’s biggest sporting event.
Australian basketball has been thriving over the past four years since the most recent Olympics, and the Boomers appear poised to deliver their most talented team in history, with a healthy balance of NBL and NBA talent on the cards.
Leading the way from an NBA point of view are the two mainstays in Joe Ingles and Patty Mills, although the pair will all but certainly participating in their last Olympic Games, having forged impressive international careers.
They will be passing the torch to the likes of Josh Giddey, Duop Reath, Josh Green and Dante Exum, all of whom performed strongly at last year’s FIBA World Cup and are emerging as the future of Australian basketball.
From an NBL perspective, recently crowned champions Will Magnay and Jack McVeigh will be looking to make their good fortune continue with a spot at the ultimate competition, while Matthew Dellavedova has clawed his way back into the squad after missing the 2023 World Cup.
There is also some young talent on the roster as well, with Rocco Zikarsky and Johnny Furphy giving Aussie fans a glimpse of the future. Although the pair may not make the final cut, it is still exciting to see the young guns getting recognition in an indicator of where the Boomers are heading.
