Reflections on a golden year for the golden girls
IT WAS another huge year for the Australian Women’s Cricket team in 2022, so as the year draws to a close, Rookie Me Central takes a look back at some of the memorable moments from the Australian team in 2022.
Ashes
The first challenge of the calendar year for the Australians was a home Ashes series against arch foes England. Unlike the Men’s Ashes, this series was multi-format, with the most points won across the series the overall Ashes winner.
First up was the T20 portion, and the Australians won the only one of the three scheduled T20s that was able to be completed, defeating England by nine wickets. Tahlia McGrath was the star that day, making 91 not out with the bat and taking 3/26 with the ball.
Next up was the Test match, and frustratingly this once off test finished in a draw after England just ran out of time to reach the tally and Australia just ran out of time to take one last wicket.
Then came the three One Day Internationals, and three pretty convincing wins to the Australians, and an overall series win to the home team.
One Day World Cup
After the triumph of the Ashes series, it was off across the ditch to the World Cup.
They finished the group stage of the tournament on top of the standings, after not losing a game across the group stage, then after defeating the West Indies in the Semi Final, it was England who awaited in the final.
Tri-Nations
Next up was a Tri-Nations warm-up series in Northern Ireland, where Australia played both Ireland and Pakistan in a round robin Twenty20 series to prepare for the upcoming Commonwealth Games.
Rain was not the friend of any of the teams in the tournament, but some games did manage to get away and the Aussies did not lose any of the games they played in that series.
Commonwealth Games
Then it was onto the English city of Birmingham for the inaugural Commonwealth Games tournament.
After topping their pool in the group stage, the Australians defeated New Zealand in the semi final to progress onto the final against India.
India ultimately proved to be no match for the Australians, and so the inaugural Commonwealth Games cricket Gold Medal went to the Aussies. Grace Harris and Ash Gardner had particularly good tournaments, with the pair able to get the Aussies out of a few tricky situations.
India Series
The final series for the Australians in 2022 wrapped up merely a week ago, with a five-match Twenty20 series in India.
Despite dropping their first Twenty20 game of the calendar year in game two of the series, the Aussies still went on to win the series four to one. Some highlights of the series included some big hitting from the likes of Beth Mooney and Ellyse Perry and some great bowling from the likes of Darcie Brown and Heather Graham.
