Preview: T20 Women’s World Cup Final 2023

AFTER countless group matches and two entertaining semi-finals, it is now time for one last clash of the titans at the Women’s T20 World Cup.

After an at-times chaotic tournament, Australia and South Africa are the last two countries left standing and are the only ones still in with a shot to be crowned World Champions.

Australia goes into the match as overwhelming favourites, but South Africa has proven time and again in the tournament that it can lift in big situations.

The Australians have only not won the T20 World Cup twice, winning five of the seven editions contested, and in the six meetings between the two sides at T20 international level, Australia has never lost. The Australians have also only lost a T20 international once in almost two years.

However, being the underdog has not been an issue for the Proteas so far in the tournament. They have had to scrape their way through this tournament, making the most of a poor tournament from New Zealand to take second spot in the group before upsetting the English in the semi final to make it to the final.

There is no doubt a lot of external pressure weighing on the South Africans heading into this final. They are the tournament hosts and this is the first time a South African national team of either gender has made the World Cup final, whereas the Australians are well used to being in World Cup finals and being in them away from home.

However, both sides have the talent to make this an enthralling match.

For Australia, many household names including Meg Lanning, Alyssa Healy and Ash Gardner have all been in good form this tournament and will no doubt continue that form into tonight’s decider.

Meanwhile for South Africa, Tazmin Brits and Laura Wolvaardt have both starred at the top of the order for the Proteas and sit in the top five run scorers for the tournament. With the ball, it is Marizanne Kapp who has been the star, taking seven wickets for the tournament to sit in fifth on the most wickets tally for the tournament.

The final of the T20 World Cup is set to take place in Cape Town at 3pm local time today, which is midnight tomorrow AEDT.
