TOMORROW sees the final of the 2021/22 Women’s National Cricket League (WNCL) season, and we will see a new champion crowned.

And for the first time in the competition’s history, the final will feature neither of the most dominant sides of the league, New South Wales and Victoria. Instead, it is Tasmania and South Australia that will battle it out for the title.

If Tasmania win, it will be the Tigers’ first ever WNCL title, while if South Australia win it will be its second ever title, and first since 2015/16. Both sides have had stellar seasons, and are deserved finalists.

Tasmania only lost one game for the entire season, while South Australia only lost the two. The most interesting battle for fans to keep an eye on tomorrow will be between Tasmania’s top order and South Australia’s bowlers.

The likes of Rachel Priest, Emma Manix-Geeves and Elyse Villani have all put on big scores for Tasmania on multiple occasions this season, so it will be critical for the Tigers’ success if they can get away well early in their innings.

Speaking of Villani, she can officially stake her claim to be one of, if not the, recruit of the season. She came across from Victoria at the end of last season and has been a crucial part in Tasmania’s rise up the ladder and the improvement of their net run rate from last season to this season.

Meanwhile for the Scorpions, the likes of Ellie Falconer and Samantha Betts have been in fine form with the ball. Both have been regularly taking multiple wickets in a game this season, and both have taken a five wicket haul on at least one occasion this season.

These two sides only met once this season, and although South Australia posted a very competitive 8/222, the likes of Villani, Manix-Geeves and Molly Strano ensured that it was no match for the Tigers, who won by five wickets.

Now the home ground advantage factor is an interesting one and not as straight forward as some may think.

This game was originally scheduled for yesterday, but got moved to tomorrow so that Tasmania could actually host the match. Now they are the home side, but have not played at home since December last year, so home much that will play into it remains to be seen.

The 2021/22 WNCL Final will take place at Blundstone Arena in Hobart tomorrow. Match starts at 10:30am AEDT.
