2021 VNSL Team Previews: Celtic Dragons

WITH the Vitality Netball Superleague (VNSL) season just around the corner after a year-long hiatus due to the COVID-19 enforced cancellation in 2020, Draft Central takes a look at each team, its player list and expectations. The first team in focus is Celtic Dragons who were building some strong momentum prior to the break.

The Dragons will be eager to make a splash during the 2021 VNSL season with some familiar faces back once again and a couple of new names joining the fray. Despite only playing three games last season the Dragons showed some promising signs with their defensive intent down the court and hunger to reclaim possession a couple of areas they will once again be hoping to implement.

2021 expectations/predictions:

The Celtic Dragons have picked up a number of players over the off-season with former Sunshine Coast Lightning defender Annika Lee-Jones joining the squad. Lee-Jones is a raw prospect that will be looking to gain some much needed exposure and really solidify herself as a force to be reckoned with down in defence, but can also play up in goals making her a highly versatile option for the squad. She is set to play alongside the likes of Abigail Tyrrell, Christina Shaw and Leila Thomas down in defence as the Celtic Dragons aim to progress up the ladder for the upcoming season.

The side has a number of young players that are looking to forge their way and create a name for themselves in the VNSL competition. Newcomer Morganne Dunn could provide a point of difference and at only 22 still has plenty of development left in her. Similarly 24-year-old attacker Rebecca Baker could be another one to keep a close eye on as the season progresses while Amy Clinton will be aiming to pick up where she left off from last season under the post. Clinton proved to be a solid option inside the goal circle converting at over 80 per cent meaning she will once again be spearheading the attack. The Dragons are not short of attacking options with Baker able to swing into wing attack, as can Laura Rudland. In terms of midcourt options Shona O’Dwyer, Sophie Morgan and Clare Jones are the best bets able to rotate through with ease.

Player to watch:

Jamaican recruit Rebekah Robinson is one to watch for the upcoming season with her natural flair and athleticism likely to set tongues wagging. Robinson is a real livewire that provides an element of versatility and raw potential for the Dragons and will be hoping to insert herself into the mix. She showcased her skillset in the VNSL All-Star game using her fancy footwork and strength in the air to reel in high looping passes and create space. Robinson is not afraid of the physicality and adds a point of difference to the Dragons side given her explosive nature and unconventional style.
