THE 2022 Suncorp Super Netball season has come to an end, so let us now take a look back at each team’s season in retrospect. Today’s team in review is the NSW Swifts, who finished fifth in 2022.
After a poor showing at the Team Girls Cup and after Sam Wallace went down in Round 1 with what turned out to be an ACL injury, many wrote the reigning champions off for season 2022.
But the Swifts certainly were out to prove their doubters wrong.
And prove them wrong they did.
Despite their slow start to the season, once the Swifts got going they really started to prove their doubters wrong.
Although they did ultimately finish in fifth, they were right in contention for finals right up until the game. If the Melbourne Vixens’ final super shot attempt had gone in, the Swifts would have played finals. They were that close.
BEST WIN
Although there were wins this season for the Swifts by much larger margins, the way they ground out the win in the final round against the Firebirds was particularly impressive.
With their season on the line and things getting tight towards the end of the match, they dug deep and held on for a two goal win.
STANDOUTS
Some of the Swifts’ most experienced players really stood up for them in 2022.
Shooter Helen Housby was a star for the Swifts this season, getting her side out of a pickle on a number of occasions with her abilities from Super Shot range.
Come the end of the season, her 56 super goals was actually the most in the league.
Maddy Proud also had a stellar season, resulting in a place in the Diamonds’ squad and winning the Swifts’ MVP at their recent awards night.
She was a workhorse through the midcourt all season, regularly recording 40-50 feeds a game.
NEXT SEASON
Like many other SSN sides, the Swifts have begun finalising their side for 2023.
With the return of Wallace to the 10 next season, one shooter was going to have to be squeezed out of the team. With the club putting their faith in Sophie Fawns and making her a permanent member of the 10, that means it is Kelly Singleton who has been squeezed out.
At this stage this is the only change to the Swifts’ squad ahead of 2023.
