2023 NSL | Round 16 preview: A big weekend for the country, a big weekend for the league

IT is a big weekend in the United Kingdom this weekend for more reasons than one.

Most importantly for netball fans, this weekend sees the beginning of the final month of the Super League season, and with so much still to play for there is no reason to turn away from the action.

There is still plenty to play for, with only one team’s place in the finals secured.

However, only four other teams are battling for those final three spots, so for anyone below fifth spot currently, their finals aspirations are done for another year.

That does not mean they cannot cause some chaos in the final month of the season, with all important momentum heading into next season up for grabs and a chance for players individually to prove why they should be heading to South Africa to represent their countries at the World Cup later this year.

This weekend sees only four matches on the cards, with the Pulse and Dragons both having the weekend off.

The action on Saturday afternoon just north of London where the Mavericks will be playing host to the Strathclyde Sirens.

With both sides out of finals contention, neither side has anything to lose so may leave it all out on the court.

Last time around it was a huge win to the Sirens with Bethan Goodwin and Towera Vinkhumbo in particular starring, but will Jodie Gibson or Razia Quashie stop Goodwin’s influence this time around?

Saturday night in Surrey sees the Storm hosting Team Bath, and after an almost 30-goal margin last time, Bath will certainly be hoping history does not repeat itself while Surrey will be hoping that it will.

It could be a big weekend for Surrey, with a win this weekend securing their place in the 2023 finals.

Last time these two met it was a particularly impressive performance from Proscovia Peace, but Jayda Pechova has been a real shining light for Bath this year so can she put in another star performance to stop Peace’s influence?

Arguably the match of the round is happening in Loughborough with the Lightning hosting the Stars.

This could be a season defining match for both sides. If the Lightning win, the top four are set and the last three weeks of the season are for determining the specific places within the top four.

If the Stars win, their season is still alive for another week, even if Manchester also get the win.

Recent history between the two sides seeds the Lightning go in as favourites on paper, but this is sure to be a tight clash as both sides have so much to play for.

Mary Cholhok was particularly impressive last time around, but what will Jo Trip have up her sleeve to counter Cholhok’s influence?

This weekend’s action ends on Sunday with a clash in Manchester between the Thunder and Rhinos.

Like the Storm and Lightning, the Thunder have a chance to secure their place in the finals this weekend, while the Rhinos will be out to cause some mayhem in their final month of the season.

Last time around it was a solid win to the Thunder, but a bad third term was what really let the Rhinos down so a key target for them will be to avoid a repeat of that.

A potentially fascinating battle will be between Lenize Potgieter and Vicki Oyesola. Oyesola has been a dominant rock in defence for the Rhinos this season, but will certainly have her hands full this week trying to contend with the height and reach capability of someone like Potgieter.
