Countdown: Top 15 SSN debutants #13
IT has been a big year of Suncorp Super Netball (SSN) that saw a host of new faces enter the league. While many may have been elevated training partners due to the extended bench there are a couple of players who made their long-awaited SSN debut with one boasting international experience. Draft Central has composed a countdown of the Top 15 SSN debutants for 2020, coming in at 13 is Adelaide Thunderbirds youngster Tayla Williams.
A real livewire in the Thunderbirds line-up, Williams provided that spark when on court able to dart around and link up the thirds through her hard running and transitional play. Williams highlighted her versatility spending some time in wing defence but did the most damage in centre, able to run both ways and employ her hands over pressure to create havoc. Her three foot marking enabled her to block her opponents vision and build pressure when on court. She was not afraid to contest every ball that came her way and made her opponent work for every pass such was her commitment to cause. She constantly showcased her hustle, to chase down every loose ball that came her way while her use of the fake on the pass also paid dividends for the Thunderbirds, sending the defenders one way while delivering the ball the other.
More of a space defender than a one-on-one style player Williams was able to read the play well and slot back into the holes to cause confusion and create turnovers for Adelaide. She linked up well with the likes of Maisie Nankivell and Chelsea Pitman through the midcourt, clearing out of the space and allowing the more experienced duo to spearhead the play. In saying that Williams was prepared to set up attacking forays herself and drive the ball through the centre thanks to her quick give and go. She was confident on her approach to goal, letting the ball go from distance or on circle edge into the likes of South African Lenize Potgieter and fellow up-and-comer Georgie Horjus. Williams was not often overawed by the more experienced players out on court, instead backing her speed and skill in to work the ball down the court and get into commanding positions to impact the play.
With limited time on court throughout season 2020 Williams took every opportunity that came her way with open arms and flourished. She finished the season with 19 goal assists highlighting her ability to deliver the ball carefully into the circle and 10 deflections to her name along with 13 general play turnovers.
