VIC M-League 2019: Mixed Premier Division wrap – Round 6
ROUND 6 of Mixed Premier Division saw a number of interesting matches play out, with three close matches seeing minor tweaks to the ladder compared to last round – seeing a massive match between Geelong Cougars and NNE Vipers go down to the wire with the Cougars only coming out on top by three goals against the winless Vipers (50-47). Similarly, Pasifika Sharks prevailed by four goals against St Therese (48-52). Meanwhile, Parkville Panthers dominated against Eastside Sonics to skyrocket their percentage once more with the 39 goal win (37-76), while this loss means Sonics have been relegated to fifth thanks to other results. Finally, Melbourne City Blackhawks had the bye so sit in seventh.
It was a close match between DDNA and Valley Wolves, with the Wolves prevailing by only two goals (43-41) and proving once more they have what it takes to steal victory in close matches. It was a come-from-behind victory for the Wolves with DDNA well and truly ready for the tough battle and putting everything on the line. Even missing key shooter Christian White, DDNA proved they have the ability to put plenty of goals on the board with Ellen Hurley shooting 21 goals while Sam Bury shot 13 goals before going down with an ankle injury during the second quarter, with the side adapting and David Butler taking the bib to shoot eight goals in the second half. The side adapted well to the now moving circle, with Sam Mackerras and Chelsea Manisani feeding well despite the change. For Valley Wolves, it was a combination of both their attack and defensive circles that got the job done in the second half, shooting 13 goals to 10 to put their fourth win on the board. Defensively, Alastair Punshon and Erin Jay kept pushing throughout and found plenty of turnover ball to propel back down the court, with the likes of Jason Heard and Hannah Kuhar putting in the hard yards against every bit of midcourt defence from DDNA’s Mackerras and Ash Jadye. Regular goaler Nat Billings only played the one quarter in the circle for the Wolves, taking a turn in wing attack in the second half and feeding well credit to her read of play and the movement of James Story (20 goals) and Monique Nagle (11) inside the circle.
