Adelaide Thunderbirds Season Preview

THE 2018 season was a tricky year for the Adelaide Thunderbirds who failed to win a game and only managed to secure a couple of bonus points. But with a big offseason of recruiting, the Thunderbirds could pose a real threat if they can establish strong connections down the court.

The Thunderbirds said goodbye to experienced defender Leana De Bruin at the end of 2018 but brought in exciting new prospect Shamera Sterling. The young Jamaican is renowned for her impressive lean, flashy intercepts and quick feet of the mark and will pair well with Adelaide defender Kate Shimmin given her aerial abilities. If the two can develop a connection in defence they could become a dominant force in the back end with their intimidating game play.

Another notable in, is New Zealand shooting sensation and long bomb specialist Maria Folau who will offer plenty of experience and class in the goal circle, which they were missing at times throughout last year. Adelaide also recruited Cody Lange who will be hoping to get some court time after suffering an ACL injury in the previous season, while youngster Sasha Glasgow impressed last season and will be wanting to make her presence felt on the court once again this year.

The versatile Layla Guscoth also signed with the Thunderbirds over the off-season and clearly impressed claiming co-captaincy with England Roses teammate Chelsea Pitman. Another Rose has made the move out to Australia with Beth Cobden also joining the Thunderbirds but may be unavailable for part of the season after rupturing her ACL mid last year. In the absence of Bongi Msomi it will be up to Pitman to lead the attack end with her drive and precision passing in the circle, if the Thunderbirds are really to contend throughout the season.

With multiple changes across the court it will be a completely different look for the Adelaide Thunderbirds who will be hoping with a new coach at the helm will guide them to their first victory since 2017. Tania Obst has done well to construct a side that has so much balance and excitement and will be hoping that her side has what it takes to knock over some teams.
