Diamonds reveal squad for South African test

AS the Diamonds gear up for the start of the Constellation Cup tonight, selectors are already thinking ahead to the next series, with the squad to take on South Africa later this month revealed this morning.

The squad is largely the same as the one about to contest the Constellation Cup, but there are a few new faces. Thunderbird Matilda Garrett has been named in the squad, and is in line to make her Diamonds debut if she gets any court time this series.

The other new faces in the squad are Amy Parmenter and Donnell Wallam, with the trio replacing Kiera Austin, Kate Moloney and Jo Weston.

Ruby Bakewell-Doran was unavailable for selection due to an ankle injury.

This news comes off the back of South Africa naming their squad for the series a few weeks ago.

The upcoming series will involve plenty of firsts for the Australian Diamonds. It is the first standalone series they are playing against South Africa in 18 years, and it is the first time Cairns and Hobart are ever hosting Diamonds matches. The series commences in Cairns before heading to Hobart for the final two matches.

“We are looking forward to playing South Africa this month as we haven’t met them since the Quad Series earlier this year,” Diamonds head coach Stacey Marinkovich said.

“This series provides us with the opportunity to explore various combinations and skill sets and continue to drive performance against another style of play.”
