Falcons keep winning streak alive

CITY West Falcons continue their 16-game winning streak with a 12-goal dominant display over the Southern Saints with only one week remaining of the regular Victorian Netball League (VNL) season.

The 58-70 victorious side in the Falcons handed the Saints their seven loss in a row in the championship division who had a promising start to the season. The Falcons look to enter their finals campaign comfortably, but with the Geelong Cougars nipping at their heels only time will tell and the Cougars are the only side to beat the Falcons this season in Round One.

Last time these two sides met the Falcons also took the four points with a seven-goal triumph back in Round Eight.

A scrappy start for both sides just proved how nervous everyone was out on court. Two intercepts  to  start the game forced a goalless start for the first two minutes with the eyes in early for the hunt. As one side started to pull away, the other came roaring back in with the Falcons taking a seven-goal lead into the first break out of nowhere.

The experience really shone through for the Falcons who have plenty of elite netball experience, whereas the Saints were missing a spark throughout court where City West could just sneak its way through and score in the blink of an eye.

Formidable Falcons combination Maggie Lind and Montana Holmes turned the jets on quickly, eyeing the shooters up and getting the ball directly to where they wanted it. They had plenty of speed to burn but knew when to pace the game when they needed to.

Saint Rylee Nelson had plenty of confidence in her side, ready to let go any ball into the circle while having a strong finesse on the feeders. They were accurate as ever and placed the shooters in primer shooting opportunity.

The lead extended slowly but surely to 10-goals going the way of the Falcons, requiring the Saints to have a big second half in order to get the win.

Geelong was anchored by an outstanding shooting performance by Falcon Jane Cook, with it seeming as though she was unstoppable under the post and her height being too much of an advantage over the Saints defenders.

The Saints reduced the margin to nine-goals heading into the final break with a nail biting finish from one end of the court to the other.

A big final quarter ahead was on the Falcons shoulders with the Saints steaming ahead, taking advantage of their closing speed and confidence on the feed.

Up and comer Mia van Wyk was fearless up against Cook in the second half, forcing her up against the baseline therefore reducing her landing space. She forced some fumbles and throw ins, thanks to her elevation and strength in the air.

Heading into the last regular round of VNL, the Falcons will face the Casey Demons who also just came off a dominant win over the weeknd, as the Saints will play for pride against an in-form Melbourne University Lightning who look to maintain their fourth position which they just crept into over the last few rounds.
