Fans Forum: 2023 NSL Underrated Player edition

WELCOME to the Netball Fans Forum, a new series here at Rookie Me Central where we hear from netball fans themselves and see what they have to say about the domestic season that have recently come to a conclusion.

In part three of this year’s series, we take a look at the players who the fans suggested were the most underrated in the Netball Super League at the moment.

One key thing about the fans’ answers was that there was no one consistent answer. Some players got more than one nomination, but no one got more than three.

The one player who got three nominations was Thunder midcourter Taylor McKevitt.

Twitter user Noely nominated McKevitt because “in what has been a star-stacked team for a few years now it is hard to stand out and Taylor does her job week in week out and they seem to steady when she is there in the midcourt and her WD really helps the defenders do their job. Also a real character who I think really matters for team spirit.”

Meanwhile Nik Warburton also nominated her because “I genuinely think she is the best WD in the league & I think she is massively underrated!”

Speaking of midcourters, the other players to get multiple nominations was Severn Star Gabriella Marshall and Lightning’s Hannah Joseph.

Two Twitter users in Adam and Laura both nominated Marshall for similar reasons around her work rate. As Adam put it, she is “the engine that never stops running and a big reason for the Stars uptick this year.”

Meanwhile Lorna nominated Joseph because “her cuts and drives to get to circle edge are stunning” while Izzy nominated her because she is “absolutely key to the success of Lightning but often doesn’t get the accolades she deserves.”

Moving onto the players that only got one nomination, and the first of those is Vicki Oyesola. The Rhinos’ defender had a bit of a breakout season in 2023, and as Lucy Roche who nominated her put it, she has “probably been a dark horse at Rhinos for the past couple of years but this year she was incredible. Although her hard work didn’t translate into wins for Rhinos, she wouldn’t give up and was the backbone for the team.”

Someone else who was nominated was Pulse shooter Berri Neil, who as nominator Phoebe Hemmings put it, has “really stepped up this season to help Pulse. Undeniable talent and control. Playing against the likes of Guscoth, Williams, and Van De Merwe she has won a lot of those battles and has been so calm under pressure when pulse needed her.”

Some other names to pop up once include Maverick Razia Quashie and Thunder trio Amy Carter, Lois Pearson and Lenize Potgieter.
