YESTERDAY saw the final round of group games at the 2023 Australian Netball Championships, with some tight results and tough fights to the finish.
West Coast Fever Reserves (63) defeated Vic Fury (57)
The Fever Reserves have finished top of the table in Pool B after a hard fought win over the Vic Fury.
It was a tight affair for much of the match, but what ultimately made the difference was a 20 goal to 14 second quarter in favour of the Fever Reserves.
Liz Dronfield (seven gains, five deflections, four intercepts) and Numi Tupaea (36 feeds, 22 assists, two gains) both starred for the Fever, as did Maggie Caris (five deflections, three gains, two intercepts) and Zara Walters (39 feeds, 26 assists, three gains) again for the Fury.
Firebirds Futures (76) defeated Territory Storm (35)
The Firebirds Futures made sure they finished their group stage with only one loss after a big win over the Storm. The Territorians were never in the match as the Queenslanders took control from the get-go.
Isabelle Sherar (seven deflections, five gains, two intercepts, two rebounds) and Ashlee Barnett (five deflections, four gains, two intercepts, two rebounds) were both among the best for the Firebirds.
On the flipside Jasmyn Hewett again proved to be the star for the Storm in a tough outing, finishing with seven deflections, three gains and an intercept.
Swifts Academy (76) defeated Tasmania Wild (48)
The Swifts Academy secured a top two berth with a big win over Tasmania. The Tasmanians were never really in the contest, but a 21 goals to nine final term from the Swifts really put the nail in the coffin.
Pillars Dakota Thomas (seven gains, six intercepts, three deflections) and Alison Miller (44 goals from 44 attempts, two feeds, two assists) really led the way for the Swifts Academy.
Meanwhile for the Tasmanians Ashlea Mawer (40 goals from 42 attempts, six feeds, two assists) starred in attack, as did Shelby Miller (28 feeds, 25 assists) in midcourt.
Sunshine Coast Lightning Bolts (66) defeated Capital Darters (55)
The Lightning Bolts picked up their first win of the tournament with a solid 11-goal win over the Darters. Although it was an improved performance scoring wise from the Darters, it still was not enough as the Bolts pulled away in the last quarter.
Ash Ervin (seven deflections, five gains, three rebounds) again shone for the Bolts, alongside fellow defender Jada Delaney (five deflections, four gains, one intercept).
Meanwhile for the Darters it was the midcourters who shone, namely Carly Symons (24 feeds, 16 assists) and Latika Tombs (38 feeds, 18 assists).
Adelaide Thunderbirds Futures (52) defeated GIANTS Academy (41)
The Thunderbirds finished the group stage undefeated with another big win, this time over the GIANTS. Restricting their opponents to only eight and nine goals in the first and second quarters respective really set up the win for the South Australians, which helped when the GIANTS came back at them in the second half.
Molly Watson (seven deflections, seven gains, five intercepts) and Tyler Orr (28 feeds, 17 assists) were again crucial in the win for Adelaide.
Meanwhile for the GIANTS Charli Fidler (10 gains, 10 deflections, five intercepts, three rebounds) was a rock in defence, while Amy Sligar (21 feeds, 14 assists) had a solid game in midcourt.
