Inaugural Rhone Hornsby Trophy awarded to Jamaica

JAMAICA has taken out the inaugural Rhone Hornsby Trophy after defeating England by eight goals in the fourth Test of the series.

There was no Helen Housby for the Roses due to being in concussion protocols after a head knock early in the previous game.

Early slick shooting from Olivia Tchine gave England a handy little lead in what was a complete contrast from yesterday’s outing. Down the other end was a very bouncy ring and inaccurate long feeds for Jamaica to help the Roses take a four goal lead in the first five minutes.

Jamaica was quick to make changes to its defensive lineup which became effective straight away. Lois Pearson was doing too much damage in the England attack end for the oppositions liking. She was carving up the attack end utilising the swing around the circle while using the angles to make the triangle an effective source.

Those previous changes lit a spark in Jamaica with Latanya Wilson and Shamera Sterling-Humphrey getting numerous gains even though England led by five goals.

Shanice Beckford continued to be Jamaica’s play maker this game by creating the plays and making use of the space given to her while the England defenders were double teaming Romelda Aiken-George on several occasions. A goal on the siren had the Roses lading by four goals, 15-11.

Some uncharacteristic errors for the Roses allowed the Sunshine Girls to get the deficit to within two goals. Everything just seemed to click for them this quarter. Both sides were confident going to the post from distance, just going to show how confident each side were that the win would be theirs.

Rebounds to Sterling-Humphrey that were converted into goals got scores level half way through the second quarter after leading by four goals at the first break.

In the last two minutes of thee game after scoring back-and-forth for majority of the quarter, Jamaica took the lead by two goals at half time.

England began to be really static in attack which gave the Jamaican defenders more opportunities for gains where they which were converted. Jamaica took a four-goal lead halfway through the third quarter.

The Roses weren’t afraid to make some changes themselves, but they didn’t really come off and resorted back to their original starting lineup.

Some discipline from England got the score back to two, but the re-introduction of Jodi-Ann Ward gave Jamaica enough breathing room to go into the last break leading by three goals. It was a controversial goal though because it looked as though the ball was still in Tchine’s hands when the siren went, but the umpires deemed the goal to count.

In just five minutes, the Sunshine Girls brought the score out to 50-43. The Roses needed to win ball and they needed to win it now if they wanted to win.

A flurry of changes for England was needed as everything begun to derail.

Tight and smothering defence by Jamaica made it difficult for England’s shooters to rotate around the circle and get front position, but by passing the ball around the outside of the circle kept the ball moving instead of the players moving to gain possession and score.

With just a couple minutes to go, it was all Jamaica with a significant scoreline winning 61-53. They had secured their second victory of the Horizon Series to take home the inaugural Rhone Hornsby Trophy.
