WEDNESDAY’s action in the M-League saw history repeat itself in the Grand Final rematch, as Parkville defeated Geelong 57-43.
The third quarter was where all the damage was done, as Parkville grew a lead and never gave it back.
Parkville started the game off perfectly, pinching a goal off the very first Geelong centre pass of the game, and then shot the next three to build a handy early lead for themselves.
After the cavalry arrived Geelong were finally able to get a couple on the board, and as the quarter progressed they managed to start to close the gap.
Things evened up as the quarter drew to a close but Geelong started to gain a bit of momentum.
However, that early Parkville dominance ensured the Panthers held a six-goal lead at the first change.
An enthralling battle up the Geelong attack end was starting to brew between Josh Byron and Jake Hederics. Although Hederics had the upper hand early, Byron started to gain the upper hand as the quarter progressed.
Parkville had a good start to the second quarter too, but Geelong then started to bridge the gap ever so slightly.
Geelong’s push did not last long as Parkville was quickly able to restore its quarter time lead and extend it even further.
In saying that, the margin did not reflect what was happening out on court for much of the quarter, as it felt like a much tighter contest than the scoreboard would suggest.
Heading into the final five minutes of the term, Parkville put the foot down and then the lead started to balloon out to beyond a 10-goal mark.
However, a late flurry of Geelong goals saw the margin sit at nine goals at the main break.
Things just went from bad to worse for Geelong in the third term.
Bad passing, simple errors and a Parkville not taking its foot off the gas all added up to a lead slipping further and further out of Geelong’s reach.
Some positional changes from Geelong led to a few small wins, but it did little to eat into the deficit.
As the siren blew for the final change, Parkville’s lead had shot out to 14 goals.
The partnership between Amy Starzer and Connor Lilly was working really well for the Panthers, and they were well fed by the Parkville mid court, led by Riley Richardson.
Despite Geelong’s best efforts in the last quarter, including some excellent long range shooting from Geelong, the damage done in the third quarter was ultimately too much for Geelong to make up.
Meanwhile in other results, Melbourne Quakes started well against Altona Falcons and survived a third quarter Falcon comeback to win by five goals, while despite NNE Vipers scoring drying up in the second half against the Valley Wolves, their strong first half was what ultimately got them over the line.
