Preview: 2022 VNL Championship Grand Final

THIS is it, the big dance.

The Victorian Netball League (VNL) has reached its Grand Final, and tonight one team will come away with the ultimate prize.

With the last two years denied a Grand Final due to the pandemic, tonight’s decider is fittingly between the last two premiers, as 2019 champions Geelong take on 2018 champions City West.

Tonight’s decider is also a replay of that 2018 decider, so City West will certainly be hoping history repeats itself tonight.

2022 has seen these two sides occupy the top two on the ladder for much of the season, so it should come as no surprise that these two teams have made it to the last night of the season.

Geelong has been the team to beat all year.

The Cougars finished top of the table, after losing only once during the regular season. However, they suffered one loss this finals series – in the major semi final against City West two weeks ago.

Not only did they record so many wins this season, they did so in such convincing fashion, which is just further proof why they have been one of the teams to beat this season.

City West, on the other hand, had a rocky start to the season, but recovered in a big way to finish second on the table.

The Falcons lost three of their first four games of the season, but really recovered to then win eight in a row, the streak only ending with a loss to the Cougars.

The Falcons are currently on a six match winning streak since that loss to Geelong, and among that list of six wins was the semi final win over the Cougars.

Speaking of the previous meetings between the sides this season, that ledger does sit at 2-1 in favour of the Cougars, but crucially for the Falcons that one win of theirs is the most recent of the three.

There are enticing matchups across the court when these two sides meet, which is sure to entertain neutrals and non neutrals alike.

There’s Brooke Allan and Victoria Honner taking on Jane Cook, Uneeq Palavi and Madelyn Gray. Zanna Woods and Julia Woolley will go up against Zoe Davies and Sarah Szczykulski. That’s not to forget Vanessa Augustini and Melissa Bragg taking on Maggie Lind and Montana Holmes.

So in the end, the two best teams will face each other one last time to decide who will ultimately be the best team in the VNL this season. Who will emerge victorious? We find out tonight.
