SSN Momentum Shifts: Round 7

ANOTHER round, another four midweek clashes as Round 7 of Suncorp Super Netball saw some phenomenal matchups across every games and some highly talented players take the court. The condensed fixture and introduction of rolling subs this year have seen plenty of young names already jump on the court and have a huge impact despite their lack of experience. We take a look at each game and note which players shifted the gears and switched up the momentum.

West Coast Fever (71) defeated Collingwood Magpies (57)

After a surprise loss last round the Fever came out with a real fire in the belly but fully asserted their dominance in the second quarter thanks to an unblemished shooting record to sink 22 goals straight. Goal shooter Jhaniele Fowler was simply unstoppable under the post as the Jamaican converted 15 goals at 100 per cent while the efforts of Alice Teague-Neeld increased as the goal attack managed five goals straight, two of which were from the super shot zone. Holding control for majority of the game, the dominant second term all but set up the remainder of the game as Fowler and Teague-Neeld terrorised the Collingwood defence, seeming to have the ball on a string and unable to miss no matter where they were in the goal circle.

GIANTS Netball (66) defeated Queensland Firebirds (65)

It was an evenly poised match with only a couple of goals separating the two sides, however the Firebirds held an early lead and did not look like giving it up until the GIANTS pulled out the ultimate trump card midway through the second quarter bringing on Diamonds captain Caitlin Bassett. The goal shooter had an immediate impact and while the movement was slightly stunted in the attacking third her accuracy and composure to post shone through. It did not take long for the GIANTS to find the goaler under the post and delivered the ball with confidence as Jo Harten, Kiera Austin and Jamie-Lee Price kicked it up a gear. Bassett came on with a point to prove nailing eight goals in the term. She single-handedly changed the course of the game with the Firebirds defence in Tara Hinchliffe and Kim Jenner struggling to nullify the experience of the talented shooter as she sunk not only 37 goals for the game but so too the match winning goal.

NSW Swifts (61) defeated Sunshine Coast Lightning (54)

Swapping and changing their attacking unit throughout the contest, it was the consistency in the final term that paid off for the for the Swifts with both Sam Wallace and Helen Housby remaining on court for the entire 15 minutes. Both shooters found not only their range but connection with one another to dish off passes into more commanding positions. Wallace only missed one goal for the term while Housby sunk four from four. The consistency in the goal circle enabled the feeders to spot them with ease as Paige Hadley, Natalie Haythornthwaite and Maddy Proud delivered the pass with confidence into the circle, negating the influence of both Phumza Maweni and Karla Pretorius.

Adelaide Thunderbirds (43) defeated by Melbourne Vixens (50)

The injection of Tegan Philip in the third quarter seemed to be the puzzle piece the Melbourne Vixens they were searching for in the attacking third. After spending the second quarter on the bench Philip came on with a renewed sense of intensity, commanding the ball and showcasing her spatial awareness. Philip found herself in the unfamiliar position of goal shooter, matched up against a formidable opponent in Shamera Sterling. Despite the long reach of the Jamaican defender, Philip used her fancy footwork and speed along the baseline to burn off Sterling and receive a wealth of ball. Her connection with Caitlin Thwaites was impeccable as the two sunk them from here, there and everywhere only missing two goals for the quarter to draw level at the final break. The move caught the Thunderbirds defenders off-guard with Sterling struggling to cope with the speed of Philip as Kate Shimmin and Layla Guscoth focused on Thwaites out the front.
