SSN Round 5 Preview: Gruelling week of netball comes to an end

THE netball in Australia never ends, not even for Easter, and round 5 of the Suncorp Super Netball ends a gruelling week of action for all teams. Fatigue may play a part across all four games this weekend, but stay tuned to find out if it does.

Sunshine Coast Lightning vs Melbourne Vixens
Tomorrow at 5pm AEST
USC Stadium

Both of these sides are coming off quite contrasting results mid week.

The Lightning will certainly be frustrated by how they performed against the Magpies. They were inaccurate from super shot range early, so by the time they came back in the last quarter the damage had already been done and the gap was just too far to bridge.

The Vixens on the other hand were on fire from super shot range, and so earned themselves a fantastic win in the top of the table clash against the Fever.

One player that the Lightning will have to keep an eye on in particular is Kiera Austin, who was stellar on Tuesday night and really on song from range.

GIANTS Netball vs Collingwood Magpies
Tomorrow at 7pm AEST
Ken Rosewall Arena

This is a clash that could be more interesting than initially anticipated.

There are questions surrounding the after effects of Covid on the GIANTS line up, with fatigue clearly setting in towards the back end of their mid week clash.

Collingwood on the other hand, had a good win on Wednesday night, and although they were missing two of their shooters, it did not matter as Nyah Allen really stepped up. The Magpies will certainly need Allen to have another stellar game if they want to make it two wins on the trot.

Although it is going to be a struggle for multiple reasons, the key for the GIANTS will definitely be not letting fatigue set in and just running out the game.

West Coast Fever vs NSW Swifts
Sunday at 12pm AWST
RAC Arena

The West Coast Fever will be keen to bounce back from their first loss on Tuesday night, especially in front of their home crowd. They also need to be more game enough to attempt shots from super shot range, which is what really let them down against the Vixens.

The Swifts on the other hand, had quite the nail biting win on Wednesday night, and the fact that they were able to grind away a gritty win like that will give them a lot of confidence, especially against a tough opponent like the Fever.

Queensland Firebirds vs Adelaide Thunderbirds
Sunday at 4pm AEST
Nissan Arena

Both of these sides are coming off quite different results from their mid week games.

The Firebirds had a good win over the GIANTS, making the most of a fatigued opposition to ultimately run away with the match.

The Thunderbirds on the other hand are starting to develop a bit of an Achilles’ Heal this season of losing close matches. That is now two matches in a row they have lost by the narrowest of margins.

The battle between Donnell Wallam and Shamera Sterling is going to be an entertaining one to watch. Wallam is proving to be the recruit of the season, while Sterling’s intercept game was on fire during the week, so expect an entertaining battle between the pair.
