Top 10 players we’d like to see in the SSN: #4 – Maia Wilson

THE Suncorp Super Netball (SSN) is already home to a number of international stars making it one of the strongest netball competitions in the world. However, we as the Draft Central team are creating a list of top 10 players we would like to see join the competition. Inside the top five at number four is New Zealand shooter Maia Wilson.

Standing at 187cm, the goal shooter has plenty of potential and has proven that she is more than just a holding shooter able to get on the move and drive out of the circle when needed. Her unique style and flair makes her one to watch while her strong hands and aerial ability is another focal point of her game style. Having spent time at the Northern Stars in the ANZ Premiership surrounded by the likes of Ferns veteran Ellen Halpenny and playing in a grand final last year, Wilson knows what it takes to compete with the best. She is frequently tasked with the likes of defensive powerhouses in Katrina Rore, Phoenix Karaka, Karin Burger and Sulu Fitzpatrick meaning she has to be on high alert and able to adjust her game plan on the fly. She is cool, calm and composed not often frazzled by the physicality of her opponents or their three-foot marking. Her ability to read the play, mark her space with her strong holds and angle her feet in a certain way to restrict the chances of a defender intercepting the ball showcases just how highly talented and knowledgeable the 22-year-old is. While the season only lasted one game, Wilson managed 40 goals from 45 attempts at 89 percent showcasing her unflappable talent and skill under the post to be a constant option.

She has played a couple of international caps alongside the highly talented Ameliaranne Ekenasio and Maria Folau and with the Ferns looking for a replacement for the latter, Wilson could be it. Although she can be shaky on the take at times especially when there is a lot of heavy contact, Wilson’s skills to move the ball quickly and silky footwork makes her a damaging prospect for years to come. As shown through their time in the SSN the likes of Laura Langman, Kimiora Poi and Folau have all added another string to their bow something, Wilson will need to do if she is to become a permanent fixture in the Ferns outfit. Although not common, credit to her strong movement and endurance Wilson can push out to goal attack giving sides something different to think about when coming up against the New Zealand shooter adding further intrigue to Wilson’s capabilities. Still developing the young goal shooter could easily become a starting player in the SSN with her ability to find the post with ease.
