VIC M-League 2019: Mixed Premier Division wrap – Round 4
ROUND 4 of Mixed Premier Division saw some big matches once more, with a massive grand final rematch between Parkville Panthers and Valley Wolves going much the same as the final itself. The Panthers continue to top the ladder after well and truly demolishing the Wolves, bumping them down to fourth with the 33 goal victory (72-39). The Wolves were unable to keep up with the Panthers from the starting whistle, conceding 18 goals to seven in the first quarter and failing to have an impact defensively. NNE Vipers came painfully close to their first win, going down by two goals to Melbourne City Blackhawks (59-61), with VNL goaler Libby Nicol (54 goals) shooting up a storm for the Blackhawks. Meanwhile, St Therese struggled against now-second ranked Eastside Sonics, going down by 14 goals but still sitting above the Vipers thanks to a Round 2 bye, while Pasifika Sharks had a bye.
Geelong Cougars started their crawl back to the top this round, moving from fourth to third with a solid 17 goal win over DDNA. The match was even early, with Cougars leading by three goals at the first change and six at half time, however DDNA just could not keep up, shooting 21 goals to 29 in the second half. DDNA’s Christian White put on a clinic at the post with 40 of the side’s 44 goals, and while fellow goaler Ellen Hurley may not have had much of an impact on the scoreboard, her feeds combined with the side’s plethora of midcourt options were key for White receiving and using the ball to DDNA’s advantage. The Cougars defensive unit was impressive with Luke Marko Rawlings and Sarah Szczykulski controlling every aspect of the circle, while the defensive pressure of Bronee Loy in wing defence saw a trio of DDNA attackers rotate through wing attack in an attempt to nullify her influence on circle edge. It was the teamwork between Geelong’s Brayden Pastore and Julia Woolley in their respective goal circle that proved to be the catalyst for DDNA’s downfall. Pastore (31 goals) and Woolley (30 goals) shared the load seamlessly, both finding the post with ease and assisted well around the circle by a variety of players, rotating through the midcourt.
