WDNA enjoy big night at Junior M-League
IT was a great night for the WNDA sides in Round 7 of the Junior M-League competition on Wednesday. All three sides in action enjoyed comfortable wins across the Under 18s and Under 15s Boys, and Under 18s Mixed divisions. We recap the four matches that went ahead for the night.
U18 BOYS RESULTS:
WDNA Panthers (58) defeated Darebin (32)
The unbeaten top-of-the-table WDNA Panthers continued their remarkable season with a comprehensive win over third placed Darebin. Piling on 20 goals to five in the first quarter, then adding 15-8 in the second to lead 35-13 at the half, the ladders leaders were in complete control. To Darebin’s credit, there was a second half comeback where it won the third term (9-8) and softened the blow in the final quarter (10-15), but still went down, 58-32.
Joel Brown was instrumental for WDNA, scoring 16 goals in the middle two quarters after resting in the opening term, then moving into goal keeper for the last. Zac Mabilia also impressed playing through centre in the first half, and then wing attack in the second, whilst Connor Lilly piled on 18 goals in the first term to set his side up before playing both goal keeper and goal attack in the second half. For Darebin, Jamie Shannon scored 18 of his side’s 32 goals playing predominately through goal attack, whilst Luka Tse Farrell finished with 14.
U18 MIXED RESULTS:
WDNA Red (51) defeated St Therese (36)
In a comprehensive first half performance, WDNA Red took the chocolates against St Therese in a 15-goal win. WDNA piled on 26 goals in the first half, whilst restricting St Therese to just 12. The top two sides in the Under 18 Mixed Division certainly showed their wares throughout the match, but while St Therese managed to win the last quarter, WDNA Red also won the third, getting out to as much as a 16-goal lead at the final break, before eventually winning by 15, 51-36.
Harrison Lefebure was outstanding for the winners, playing all three midcourt roles in the victory. Aiding the early advantage, goal attack Nick O’Meara scored 12 goals in the opening half, before moving into goal keeper in the final term. Sophia Bloch had a big opening term with nine goals for WDNA, and after a break in the second term, scored 13 goals in the last half through goal attack. St Therese’s Olivia Cawtharay finished with 26 goals, and her move from goal attack into goal shooter in the second half yielded results with 18 of those goals coming after half-time.
DDNA (47) defeated Darebin (31)
Meanwhile in a battle of the bottom two sides, DDNA further cemented its third place ladder position with a 16-goal win over Darebin. DDNA scored 10 goals to four in the opening term, and whilst Darebin hit back in the second to only lose the quarter by two, DDNA got back on top in the third, 14-5. By that stage, the score was 38-21, and whilst Darebin won the last quarter 10-6, it was a case of too little, too late, and DDNA got home, 47-31.
Despite the loss, Jaimie Shannon was outstanding for Darebin for the first three quarters in goal attack. They scored 10 goals in the second term on their way to a total of 17 before a well-earned rest in the fourth quarter. Hudson Ebbage came into the attacking goal circle in the final term to score eight goals, after playing centre and goal defence prior. The winners had plenty of contributors through, with Josh Ferris impressive in the centre and wing attack bibs for the first three quarters, before rolling into goal shooter in the last. Leona Hristovska scored 22 goals in three quarters at goal attack for DDNA, whilst Samantha Kirkright impressed through wing defence and goal defence.
U15 BOYS RESULS:
WDNA Black (44) defeated Caulfield (26)
In the only Under 15s Boys match to go ahead, WDNA Black further established itself as the team to beat this season, remaining undefeated with an 18-goal win over second placed Caulfield. Though the losers were brave in the loss, a dominant first half by the top-of-the-table side proved the difference. WDNA Black scored 20 goals to nine in the first half to open up an 11-goal lead. Caulfield broke even in the third term, before another big quarter by WDNA Black (14-7) saw the ladder leaders win, 44-26.
Whilst WDNA Black’s Joel Brown scored nine goals in goal attack and impressed for the winners, it was the work of Kane Wilson in goal keeper, keeping his opponent to just two goals in the first half, that was instrumental in the win. Jaden Suafoa‘s move from goal attack (seven goals) in the first half, into goal shooter (10 goals) in the second half, did level the game out. William Whiteacre also had an impact moved into goal attack (seven goals) after playing in goal keeper through the first half.
