2020 ATP Hungarian Open fantasy tennis: Former top 10s reach last eight
A COUPLE of former top 10 players took down the reigning champion and an in-form player after a huge day of action in the 2020 ATP Hungarian Open fantasy tennis tournament. South African wildcard Kevin Anderson and Argentinian Juan Martin del Potro joined fifth seed Croatian Borna Coric and Serbian qualifier Viktor Troicki in the quarter finals.
Anderson caused the biggest shock of the day with a straight sets win over reigning champion, Matteo Berrettini 6-4 7-5 to advance through to the quarter finals. Berrettini will drop down the rankings after the second round loss, failing to win a game at the tournament he won in 2019 and was favourite for this time around.
Del Potro won through with a 6-1 4-6 6-1 victory over Nikoloz Basilashvili in one of the matches of the day. Basilashvili was in great form after his victory in Houston a couple of weeks ago, but the experienced Argentinian was on his game during the match and looked to be cruising early before the third set Georgian fought back. While the third seed levelled the match at that point, del Potro found his range again and raced away in the deciding set to win comfortably.
In the other two matches, fifth seed Coric and qualifier Troicki earned places in the next round courtesy of three-set wins. Coric downed up and comer Mikael Ymer 6-3 1-6 6-2 in two hours and 10 minutes, while Troicki fought hard but eventually shook off Frenchman Pierre-Hugues Herbert 6-3 3-6 6-4 in two and a half hours.
The quarter finals begin tomorrow with sixth seed John Millman up against Latvian Ernests Gulbis, followed by second seed Filip Krajinovic taking on American teenager Brandon Nakashima. The night session sees Anderson face Troicki and del Potro go head-to-head with Coric.
