2020 ATP Indian Wells fantasy tennis: Trio survive early deficits
THREE terrific come-from-behind wins on the opening day of Draft Central’s Indian Wells ATP Masters 1000 tournament marked a big day of action. Spain’s Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, Sweden’s Mikael Ymer and Italy’s Andreas Seppi all came from a set down to post wins over their respective opponents and move through to the second round of the tournament.
Davidovich Fokina lost the first set to French young gun, Ugo Humbert 6-2 but turned it around to win the next in a tight one and then building on that momentum to post a 2-6 7-5 6-2 victory. Ymer took on hard court specialist, Japan’s Yoshihito Nishioka and was overwhelmed in the first set as the Japanese player won it 6-1. Ymer soon found that form that took him to the top 100 however, fighting back to eventually win in just over two and a half hours, 1-6 6-4 6-2. Likewise, Seppi was also down after the first set, dropping it to Brazil’s Thiago Monteiro 6-2, before bouncing back to break his opponent once in each set to win 2-6 6-4 6-3.
In other results, Australia’s Nick Kyrgios got the better of Australian Open quarter finalist, Tennys Sandgren 7-5 6-2 in an hour and 40 minutes, with Sandgren the only American to bow out so far with better news for Tommy Paul and Steve Johnson who both made their way through to the second round. French veteran, Richard Gasquet showed he still had plenty of tricks with a dominant 6-1 6-2 thrashing of compatriot, Corentin Moutet, while the in-form players in Lloyd Harris and Jiri Vesely – who have made a final and won a title thus far in 2020 – also continued their run with a place in the Round of 64.
The other winners on day one were Philipp Kohlschreiber, Frances Tiafoe, Pierre-Hugues Herbert, Yasutaka Uchiyama, Gregoire Barrere, Miomir Kecmanovic and Pablo Cuevas.
Some of the matches to watch on day two of the tournament include Croatian Marin Cilic going head-to-head with American Reilly Opelka, Australian Jordan Thompson facing Spanish veteran Feliciano Lopez, and an equally intriguing Spain-Australia clash between Fernando Verdasco and John Millman.
