2020 ATP Marrakech Open fantasy tennis: Horrid day for French with quartet bowing out in first round

BENOIT Paire became the first seeded casualty of the Marrakech Open fantasy tennis tournament, with the three other seeds joining the four winners from yesterday in the second round. Paire went down to unseeded Argentinian, Federico Delbonis in the first round today, but not without a fight. The match lasted just over two hours before the clay court player was able to get the better of Paire, 6-3 4-6 6-3.

It was the only three-set match of the day as number one seed, Alexander Zverev won in a rather anticlimactic way against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. In what was anticipated as a huge first round match between two top 10 players at their best, it was obvious Tsonga was not quite up to the level in his second tournament back, going down to Zverev, 6-3 6-1 in 68 minutes. It was almost identical for fifth seed Serbian, Filip Krajinovic who cruised to an easy 6-2 6-1 win over Uzbekistan qualifier, Denis Istomin.

In the last remaining seeded match, eighth seed Brit, Kyle Edmund got up with a 7-5 6-2 win over free-falling American wildcard Frances Tiafoe. Top 50 only months ago, Tiafoe has slipped outside the top 100 and looks to fall further after the disappointing defeat at the hands of the in-form Edmund. The Brit takes on German, Philipp Kohlschreiber in the second round after Kohlschreiber knocked out veteran Spaniard, Feliciano Lopez 6-3 6-2.

In the other results, it was better news for Spain with a couple of unseeded competitors making it through to the Round of 16. Albert Ramos-Vinolas booked a date with Zverev in the next round after a 6-4 6-4 victory over Frenchman, Gilles Simon. Meanwhile, Pablo Andujar triumphed 7-5 6-4 over the challenging Jiri Vesely who had been in some good form in recent weeks. In the final match of the day, Marton Fucsovics continued his red-hot form with a 6-1 6-0 smashing of young Frenchman, Ugo Humbert.

Looking ahead to tomorrow’s first day of second round action, second seed Fabio Fognini locks horns with Australian wildcard Thanasi Kokkinakis, followed by fourth seed Pablo Carreno Busta clashing with Fernando Verdasco in an all-Spanish battle. Later on, Argentinian sixth seed Guido Pella meets Chilean Nicolas Jarry, before Marin Cilic and Thiago Monteiro do battle.
