2020 WTA Copa Colsanitas fantasy tennis: Siniakova the last seed standing
THE final four of the Copa Colsanitas have been decided after the quarter finals provided a mixed bag of results. Second seed Czech, Katerina Siniakova moved through to the semis with a straight sets win over eighth seed Russian, Anna Blinkova, 6-3 6-4. She was joined the final four by fellow Europeans, Anna Potapova, Viktoria Kuzmova and Elisabetta Cocciaretto who all won their respective quarter finals.
Siniakova won through with a 6-3 6-4 triumph over Blinkova in a strong performance to book a spot in the semi-finals. The match lasted 94 minutes with the higher ranked Siniakova eyeing off a top 50 spot with a run in Bogota. She now has to take on Italian qualifier, Cocciaretto whose run to the final four is ultra-impressive. Having already beaten three players inside the top 65 in Ajla Tomljanovic, Victoria Azarenka and now Alize Cornet, Cocciaretto will be no easy beat. Though the Italian had her work cut out for her in the quarter final against Cornet, dropping the first set before recovering to win in three sets. Facing a match point in the second set tiebreaker, Cocciaretto won the final three points of the set to win the set, break even and run away with the momentum in the decider to win, 5-7 7-6 6-1.
In the other half of the draw, a couple of unseeded players go head-to-head with Potapova and Kuzmova both earning the right to face off in the semi-finals. Potapova downed Taiwan’s Su Wei Hsieh in straight sets, 6-4 6-2, while Kuzmova had a tougher encounter against German, Andrea Pekovic. That match went the full distance into three sets with the up and coming Slovakian eventually getting the chocolates with a 6-3 5-7 6-1 victory. It lasted about two and a half hours before Kuzmova could be declared the victor, and now the duo will go at it in the second match of the day tomorrow behind the Siniakova and Cocciaretto clash.
