2020 WTA Copa Colsanitas fantasy tennis: Teenage talent Cocciaretto takes out Bogota crown
ELISABETTA Cocciaretto has won her maiden WTA Tour title by claiming the 2020 Copa Colsanitas fantasy tennis tournament. The 158th ranked Cocciaretto qualified to be in the main draw and then stormed her way to the title with four consecutive wins over top 65 ranked players, before downing world number 87, Viktoria Kuzmova in the final, 6-1 4-6 6-4.
In what was an impressive showing the first set, the Italian stormed to an early lead by winning it 6-1 courtesy of three breaks in a dominant first 25 minutes. Kuzmova found the form that led her to the final in the second set by breaking early and holding steady to win the set and break even with a 6-4 result. The deciding set was equally as close, with the Italian finding her feet once again, breaking crucially and then holding on in a couple of nervous games to win in two hours and eight minutes.
The win catapulted Cocciaretto into the top 100, enabling her to automatically qualify for Grand Slams should her form maintain the level inside her now 95th placing. Kuzmova had a boost herself, shooting up 17 places to move into number 68th in the world. In doing so, Cocciaretto doubled her all-time earnings and will look to increase that in the coming months. With the WTA Tour breaking off into Stuttgart and Istanbul, it will be fascinating to see where both she and Kuzmova head in their next tournament, hopefully bringing the same form into that. With the title being Cocciaretto’s first on tour, a big future is predicted for the young and talented Italian who has certainly put the rest of the tour on notice with the title win.
