2020 WTA Fantasy Mexican Open: Top seed smashed as Minnen and Friedsam advance

THE second day of the Mexican Open proved to be just as explosive as the first day, with the number one seed bundled out in less than an hour. Russian, Varvara Gracheva won just one game in a horror show 48 minutes, losing 6-1 6-0 to American Coco Vandeweghe. It was a mixed day for the United States on court as Shelby Rogers was on the other end of a similar beating, losing to fourth seed Belgian Greet Minnen, 6-2 6-0 in 58 minutes.

One of the tournament favourites in German sixth seed, Anna Lena Friedsam moved through with a hard-fought win over tough competitor, Switzerland’s Viktorija Golubic 6-4 7-6. She now takes on Mexican wildcard, Renata Zarazua in the next round after she toppled German, Tamara Korpatsch in straight sets, 6-4 6-3. Also out of the tournament is fifth seed, Katarina Zavatska of Ukraine. She succumbed to a strong performance from young Australian, Maddison Inglis. The West Australian won 6-3 6-1 to knock out yet another seed from the tournament, leaving just three seeds in the Round of 16.

In other results, Caty McNally was another United States representative who moved through to the Round of 16 courtesy of a 5-7 7-5 6-1 victory over Russian, Margarita Gasparyan. It was not as good news for young United States talent, Ann Li who bowed out in three sets. She lost to the underrated Liudmila Samsonova of Russia, with the more experienced player triumphing in about an hour and 40 minutes, 2-6 6-1 7-5 in a come-from-behind victory. The final match of the day saw Brazillian Beatriz Haddad Maia move through with a 6-3 7-5 over top 10 doubles player, Barbora Krejcikova in a competitive and challenging 6-3 7-5 win.

Tomorrow’s day of action sees the third seed Peng Shuai take on equally experienced Romanian, Monica Niculescu, while Aliaksandra Sasnovich meets with Timea Bacsinszky in the following game. Another Swiss talent in Stefanie Voegele takes to the court later in the day against Anna Kalinskaya, while French up-and-comer Oceane Dodin meets German, Mona Barthel in the other Round of 16 clash.
