2020 WTA Indian Wells fantasy tennis: Muguruza and Sabalenka to battle for Indian Wells title

GARBINE Muguruza and Aryna Sabalenka are through to the Indian Wells final after an impressive couple of results in the fantasy tennis tournament. Muguruza had to see off world number one Ash Barty, while the ninth seed Sabalenka smashed multiple Grand Slam winner, Serena Williams in less than an hour to progress through to the final.

Muguruza’s win over Barty was far from easy, taking out the match 7-6 6-4 in about two hours and 14 minutes. The pair traded blows throughout the contest, with the first set going to a tiebreaker after Barty had a break at 5-3. The Spaniard hit back to drag the match into the tiebreaker, winning three of the next four games, then delivering 7-4 in the tiebreak to take out the set. An early break in the second set helped Muguruza gain an early advantage and she held on from there with reliable shot making and consistency across the court.

Sabalenka’s one-sided victory over Williams was much more straight forward with the clash taking just 51 minutes to complete. After actually trailing 1-2 in the first set, the Belarusian produced her A grade tennis to win the next 11 games on the trot and leave a stunned Williams in her wake. She was far more consistent than Williams, but showed she had the power to match her too, winning 6-0 6-2 in emphatic fashion. Now she heads into her 11th career final, having won six already in her career including Doha this year.

Muguruza is on the return trail of her career and hopes to build on her Australian Open final with a triumph her at Indian Wells, having won seven titles from 12 finals including a couple of Grand Slams. While her 2016 Roland Garros and 2017 Wimbledon titles seem a lifetime away, it goes to show just how high quality she is at her best, with four major finals including 2015 Wimbledon to go with her Melbourne Park appearance this year. Sabalenka won the 2019 Indian Wells doubles title last year with Elise Mertens, as well as the US Open and Miami Open which gives her confidence on the hard courts.
