2020 WTA Madrid Open fantasy tennis: Ostapenko joins seeded ranks in semi-finals
JUST the one unseeded name heads into the semi-finals of the Madrid Open fantasy tournament as seeds once again reigned supreme on the competition.
Despite a rocky start against fellow top 10 seed Naomi Osaka, Ukrainian talent Elina Svitolina has once again propelled herself into the semi-finals. The 2-6 6-4 6-2 victory was a tough one with Osaka never one to back down, but Svitolina grabbed hold of the momentum late in the second set to ensure she pulled through and came out on top of the Japanese high flyer. Svitolina will hope for a good chance of making the final when she takes on the only unseeded player left in the draw in Jelena Ostapenko tomorrow, after the 23-year-old Latvian starred against qualifying American, Taylor Townsend. Ostapenko absolutely blew Townsend out of the water, running away with the 52-minute 6-2 6-1 victory to head to the semis.
The winners of the other half of the draw will go head to head tomorrow also after defeating their respective unseeded opposition. Garbine Muguruza had a tough battle against American Sloane Stephens, who won the first set before struggling in the latter stages of the game to eventually go down 4-6 6-3 6-0. Muguruza was ruthless in the third set, not allowing Stephens a single opportunity to grab the upper hand and causing errors for the American. But Muguruza will have a much tougher task tomorrow when she lines up against Petra Kvitova, with the Czech talent a three-time Madrid champion and fresh off a straight sets victory over Polish teen, Iga Swiatek. Swiatek has had a stellar tournament knocking down some top talent in her path but could not stop Kvitova on this occasion, going down 6-4 6-3. Kvitova’s threatening serve and attacking mentality was too much for the young talent who was forced to go on the defensive, seeing two massive matches drawn for the Madrid Open semi-finals tomorrow.
