2020 WTA Prague Open fantasy tennis: Czech mate in quarter finals
FOUR of the five seeded players left in the draw will continue on to the semi-finals after solid performances in the Prague Open fantasy tennis quarter finals. All three Czech competitors continued their stellar form, seeing first, second and fourth seeds in Karolina Pliskova, Marketa Vondrousova and Petra Kvitova head to the semis with Ukrainian Elina Svitolina the final building block.
Pliskova was the only player brought to three sets, as her Russian opponent Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova ran away with the first set before easing off as the match went on. Pliskova was cool, calm and collected in her approach, coming out on top with consistent and confident second and third sets to run out victor, 4-6 6-2 6-1. Pavlyuchenkova’s compatriot in Svetlana Kuznetsova also could not compare to her Czech opposition, going down to Kvitova in straight sets. Kvitova was threatening from the get-go, winning the first set in 30 minutes before Kuznetsova put up a challenge early in the second. It was not enough however, with Kvitova coming away with the 6-1 6-3 victory.
Kvitova will take on Svitolina in the semi-final and will need to bring it against the Ukrainian talent who stunned German grand slam winner, Angelique Kerber in her 6-1 6-0 victory. Svitolina blew Kerber out of the water, forcing uncharacteristic errors and dominating every aspect of the match. Meanwhile, Vondrousova came away with a solid win over third seed Garbine Muguruza, throwing everything she had at the Spanish talent who almost got over the line in the second set. But Muguruza was missing the consistency and momentum she needed to win the match, seeing Vondrousova collect the 6-4 7-6 win and head into the semis.
Along with the Kvitova versus Svitolina matchup, it will be an all-Czech battle on the other side of the draw as Pliskova takes on Vondrousova for the last spot in the finals.
