2022 ATP Cup Spain preview

SPAIN will attempt to overcome the loss of two of its top four stars to take out the 2022 ATP Cup. Entering the third edition of the event, Spain has always reached the knockout stage of the draw. Spain lost to Italy in the semi-finals of the 2021 ATP Cup, after missing out on the 2020 title with a loss to Serbia in the final.

2022 SPAIN TEAM

Roberto Bautista Agut
Pablo Carreno Busta
Albert Ramos-Vinolas
Alejandro Davidovich Fokina
Pedro Martinez

Whilst Spain has long been a title contender at any team event, without its greatest ever player in Rafael Nadal, the European nation comes in as the lowest ranked nation in its Group A. Spain is ranked 13th overall, and has drawn the top ranked nation Serbia, as well as Norway and Chile.

Despite being ranked 13th overall, Spain still has a strong chance of progressing, given it actually has the highest ranked second and third singles players in the group, in Carreno Busta (20th) and Ramos-Vinolas (45th) respectively. Ramos-Vinolas, along with Davidovich Fokina and Martinez are all in line to make their ATP Cup debuts.

Whilst Bautista Agut will have his work cut out for him against world number one Novak Djokovic, there is a good chance Spain could claim the other singles, and then have a shot at the doubles. Similarly, both Norway and Chile have little depth outside of their top players in Casper Ruud and Cristian Garin respectively, and with the event on hard court, there is every chance Spain can triumph in both those clashes.

Serbia would be favoured to advance to the next stage, but anything is possible for Spain, who could clinch the crucial doubles. Whether or not Spain could go deep in the tournament is doubtful, though if they had both Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz, then it would have been an exciting team.

Prediction: 2nd in Group A
