2022 ATP Cup Poland preview
POLAND will rely on a vastly improved rising star on the ATP Tour in the upcoming 2022 ATP Cup. Next month’s team tournament will be a huge test for the European nation, as their sole Top 100 player – ranked inside the Top 10 – looks to carry the load alongside lower ranked teammates in a group that is feasible enough to get through with a bit of luck.
2022 POLAND TEAM
Hubert Hurkacz
Kamil Majchrzak
Kacper Zuk
Jan Zielinski
Szymon Walkow
World number nine Hurkacz had a massive 2021, and maintained his place inside the Top 10 from August through until year’s end. Whilst his ATP Finals did not go to plan, he did have a rare win over Daniil Medvedev earlier in the year at Wimbledon. In 2021, Hurkacz triumph in three titles, including the Miami ATP Masters 1000. Now he will lead Poland into the ATP Cup against Greece, Argentina and Georgia.
Though Majchrzak is the second singles player ranked way down in 117th, the Polish 25-year-old is actually higher ranked than who he will face rom Greece and Georgia. Both the second singles players and beyond are outside the Top 200. Argentina will be the big challenge, with Federico Delbonis and Federico Coria both inside the Top 75. If he can cause an upset, then there is every chance Poland can advance to the semi-finals of the event.
World number 168 Zuk is the third singles player for Poland, having won three of his six career ATP Tour matches. He is only 22-years-old and slowly developing, and could well earn a crack here. Doubles player Zielinski is ranked inside the Top 100, at a career-high 95th at the moment, whilst Walkow is just behind him in 105th. Though they do not have a great deal of experience on the ATP Tour, they are a potentially-strong doubles combination for this event. Overall Argentina looks too strong, but the other nations could well be fair game.
Prediction: 3rd in Group D
