2022 Indian Wells ATP scores: Round of 16

AS part of the Indian Wells WTA 1000 Masters coverage, we will be adding the Round of 16 scores all in one place, as well as some highlighted matches from the day.

MI O MI(R) WHAT A WIN

Unseeded Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic has upset sixth seed Italian Matteo Berrettini in a three-set thriller to reach the Indian Wells quarter finals. In what was just the world number 61’s second Top 10 win in his career, the 22-year-old defeated the rising Italian 6-3 6-7 6-4 in two hours and 29 minutes. Boasting a career-high 38, Kecmanovic is two wins away from beating that. Though it would require him to at least make the final, the new world number 48 has moved up 13 spots already.

The win marked the second time Kecmanovic had reached the last eight at Indian Wells, having achieved the feat the last time the event was played in March back in 2019. He will now face American Taylor Fritz in the quarter finals to achieve his best ever effort at an ATP Masters 1000 event.

MONFILS FAILS TO ESCAPE ALCARAZ

Spanish teenager Carlos Alcaraz has continued his dream run at the ATP Masters 1000 with a straight sets victory over Frenchman Gael Monfils. Both players came into the Round of 16 off the back of terrific wins, with the Spaniard destroying compatriot Roberto Bautista Agut 6-2 6-0, whilst Monfils stunned temporary number one Daniil Medvedev. In reaching the quarter finals, Alcaraz not only achieves a personal milestone of making his first ATP Masters 1000 last eight, but also became the youngest player to achieve the feat at Indian Wells since Michael Chang in 1989.

“It means a lot to me,” Alcaraz said post-match. “It’s really special to be in the quarter-finals in a Masters 1000. I’m really proud of the level that I’m playing this tournament. I love this tournament and being in the quarter-finals here is pretty good.”

The Spanish young gun entered the tournament as world number 19, and has already moved up two spots. Alcaraz can slide into 15th in the world with a quarter finals in over reigning champion, Cameron Norrie. If the teenager can somehow go all the way at the event, he will be the new world number 13. Though he lost, Monfils boosted his ranking to 24th in the world.
