DAY nine at the 2022 French Open saw more of the big names fall, this time on the men’s side of the draw.

One of those was Stefanos Tsitsipas, who lost to unseeded Dane Holger Rune.

The teenage world number 40 was pretty clinical in his win over the Greek, winning 7-5, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.

It was actually Tsitsipas who was the first to break serve in the opening serve, opening up a 3-1.

His lead did not hold for long though as Rune broke back the very next game and held serve to draw level again at three all.

It took another five games for either player to break serve, and it was Rune who did so. That was enough for him as he then held serve the following game to take the set 7-5.

The second set however went very differently from the first.  

Both players did hold their first three service games each to find the score line at three all, but then things changed. Rune did not win another game for the set as Tsitsipas won the next three games in a row to take the set 6-3.

With the score locked at one set apiece, there were still twists left in this tale.

The third set started just like the previous two had, with both players holding their first couple of service games.

Things started to fall apart for Tsitsipas in game six of the set though, as the Greek double faulted on the way to having his serve broken.

He did win his next service game though, but it ultimately did not matter as Rune was too strong on serve and went on to win the set 6-3.

The fourth set also started out even but did not end even as Rune went on to win the set 6-4 and the match in four.

Despite only winning one set, Tsitsipas served double the number of aces that Rune did, but did serve one more double fault then Rune did.

Rune had the better first serve percentage and percentage of wins on first serve, while both had the same percentage of wins on their second serve.

Rune served more winners then Tsitsipas did, and also recorded less forced and unforced errors then Tsitsipas did.

Next up Rune has got a date with Casper Ruud, who despite a late hiccup against Hubert Hurkacz still beat the Pole 6-2, -6-3, 3-6, 6-3.

AROUND THE COURTS

Tsitsipas was not the only top ten seed to fall on day nine.

Daniil Medvedev also fell on day nine, beaten pretty comfortably in straight sets by Marin Cilic.

Andrey Rublev lost the first set against Jannik Sinner, before winning the second and Sinner ultimately retiring in the third with the Russian 2-0 up.

While over in the women’s draw, Iga Swiatek and Jessica Pegula both lost the first set in their respective matches but went on to win in three.

Veronika Kudermetova upset Madison Keys in three sets, while Daria Kasatkina beat Camila Giorgi in three sets.
