2020 ATP Indian Wells fantasy tennis: Top four through to semis after straight sets wins

IT was rather anti-climactic, but the four best players at Indian Wells are through to the ATP Tour semi-finals. With Roger Federer still out injured, Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Daniil Medvedev and Dominic Thiem were the top four seeds. Despite impressive performances throughout the tournament, it was still the top-end talent that shone at the pointy end of the tournament with the quartet making their way through to the last four.

Of the four quarter finals, it was Medvedev’s straight sets win that was the tightest, getting up against 10th seed Italian, Fabio Fognini 6-2 7-5. It looked to be a one-sided contest after a 32-minute first set, but the Italian fought back to make more of a challenge in the second, before Medvedev broke in the 11th game to take out the set, and match in an hour and 38 minutes.

The last match of the day was a breeze with Djokovic using all of his experience and talent to roll past teenager, Felix Auger-Aliassime 6-0 6-3 in 57 minutes. He looked to have no issues whatsoever in the first set, stunning the Canadian as he pulled out 27 winners in a dazzling display. He looked just as good in the second despite Auger-Aliassime restoring some pride, but Djokovic was just far too good, winning through in less than an hour.

The first match of the day saw reigning Indian Wells champion, Thiem roll past 11th seed, Roberto Bautista Agut. The Spanish veteran knocked over fifth seed, Stefanos Tsitsipas in straight sets the round before, but was no match for Thiem, who defeated Bautista Agut 6-2 6-1 in an hour and seven minutes. The Austrian will now face Nadal in the semi-finals in a bid to reach another Indian Wells final.

Nadal made his way through to the semis courtesy of a 6-3 6-2 victory over Chilean, Cristian Garin. The up-and-comer had knocked over eighth seed Gael Monfils in the Round of 16 and looked good to give the Spanish star a challenge. Unfortunately for the South American that would not be the case, bowing out in straight sets, 6-3 6-2 in an hour and 41 minutes.

The semi-finals take place tomorrow with Thiem and Nadal up first, followed by Djokovic and Medvedev going at it for a spot in the 2020 Indian Wells final.
