ANASTASIA Potapova has caused the major upset of the first round at the 2020 Copa Colsanitas fantasy tennis tournament in Bogota. The Russian talent took it up to the first seed more than many might have expected, and ended up smashing the top 50 Czech, Marie Bouzkova 6-2 6-3. It was one of two seeded upsets on day two of the Colombian tournament, with plenty of three set matches taking place in a huge day of action.

Also departing on day two was fifth seed American, Lauren Davis who bowed out at the hands of German, Laura Siegemund. The unseeded German got up 6-1 5-7 6-1 in a topsy-turvy momentum-swinging match before posting a win in just under two hours of play. It was much easier for third seed Alison Van Uytvanck, as the Belgian defeated Italian Camila Giorgi, 6-4 6-2 in just over an hour. In the other seeded match of day two, Frenchwoman Fiona Ferro came back from an early scare against Brazilian wildcard, Beatriz Haddad Maia to win 6-7 6-3 6-4 in the longest match of the day, lasting two hours and 32 minutes.

American qualifier and winner of the 2020 Mexican Open, Coco Vandeweghe made her way through to the Round of 16 with an upset over Czech, Kristyna Pliskova 7-5 6-3. Joining her in the Round of 16 was Taiwan’s Su Wei Hsieh who came from behind to defeat American Taylor Townsend in three sets, 3-6 7-6 6-4. In the final two matches of the first round, Russian Viktoria Kuzmova knocked off the sole Colombian in the draw – Maria Osorio Serrano – to win 7-6 4-6 6-0, and German Andrea Petkovic eliminated former top five player and Italian qualifier, Sara Errani 6-4 6-1.

Looking ahead to tomorrow’s matches, a couple of young guns go head-to-head in eighth seed Russian, Anna Blinkova and Swiss talent, Jil Teichmann, while second seed Katerina Siniakova takes on American qualifier, Ann Li. In the other two matches, Romanian Irina Camelia Begu faces Frenchwoman Alize Cornet, while Belarusian Grand Slam winner, Victoria Azarenka locks horns with Italian qualifier, Elisabetta Cocciaretto.
