2020 WTA Roland Garros fantasy tennis: Seeds dropping like flies ahead of Round of 16
THE second Round of 32 saw a couple of interesting results play out at the Roland Garros fantasy tournament, namely some big scalps with both third seed Simona Halep and seventh seed Serena Williams knocked out of contention. The pair were just two of the five seeds to fall on day six.
Yulia Putintseva came out flying against Halep, barely giving the Romanian a chance to work into the game and running away with the 6-1 6-3 win. While Williams had a slower start against Italian, Camila Giorgi, the unseeded talent pushed through the dangerous American for the 6-4 7-6 victory and shocked crowds with her tenacity, absorbing the pressure well. Joining Halep and Williams on the sidelines are 22nd seed Maria Sakkari, whose impressive recent form couldn’t hold up against Karolina Pliskova, Williams’ compatriot and 26th seed Amanda Anisimova and 23rd seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.
The only American prospect from this half of the draw to head through to the Round of 16 is Madison Keys, who had a tough match against compatriot Coco Vandeweghe. But a stellar final set gave Keys the confidence she needed to put away Vandeweghe, as did second seed Elina Svitolina who survived a scare from unseeded Serbian, Nina Stojanovic. Svitolina may have lost the first set but did not let that faze her, taking out the second and third sets in under an hour to finish off the match. The final match of the day saw Elise Mertens defeat Czech talent, Katerina Siniakova in straight sets, seeing the 19th seed join some other quality names in the Round of 16.
