Almost all seeds pass first test on AO Opener

THERE were not too many surprise results on the opening day of action at the 2025 Australian Open, but just like tradition not all seeds survived the first set of action.

The biggest seed to fall on the opening day of action was Linda Noskova, with the 29th seed unable to get past Dane Clara Tauson.

In a hard fought match that lasted over two hours, the Czech took the first set before the Dane came back and took the next two to emerge victorious 5–7, 6-3, 6-4.

Although both players were a bit wobbly on serve – serving seven double faults each – Tauson also served a whopping 13 aces compared to just seven from Noskova. Despite Noskova recording more winners than Tauson did, the Dane finished with less unforced errors and won more break points than her more highly fancied opponent did.

Tauson now moves on to play German Tatjana Maria, who won her opening match yesterday in straight sets 7-6. 6-4 against American Bernarda Pera.

Errors really let Pera down, serving a whopping 11 double faults and recording 54 unforced errors compared to just the 17 Maria recorded.

Some of the other big names to win yesterday were top seed Aryna Sabalenka, fifth seed Qinwen Zheng and 11th seed Paula Badosa. It was not a good day for the lone Aussie Daria Saville though, who although took the first set off Anna Blinkova, was unable to continue that momentum and ultimately lost in three sets.
