Sydney Tennis Classic

In some star-studded clashes, five seeds from both the men’s and women’s draw made their way into the quarter finals. Top four seeds in Garbine Muguruza, Barbora Krejcikova and Anett Kontaveit all made it through, whilst fifth seed Paula Badosa accounted for the sole Australian Ajla Tomljanovic, and Ons Jabeur won in a tight one over Petra Kvitova. In the men’s, Reilly Opelka knocked out the last remaining Australian man, defeating wildcard Jordan Thompson in straight sets, to set up a quarter final clash with the only other American, Brandon Nakashima who had toppled Fabio Fogini. Wildcard Andy Murray made it through after a massive battle with Nikoloz Bailashvili to face eighth seed Belgian David Goffin the final eight.

Adelaide International 2

It was not as predictable in Adelaide with the top two seeds out in both the men’s and women’s competitions. Brazilian Thiago Monteiro made the most of his second chance as a lucky loser to make it through to the quarter finals with a win over top seed Gael Monfils who retired, whilst local hope Thanasi Kokkinakis knocked off second seed John Isner in three tiebreak sets. Karen Khachanov and Marin Cilic continued their good form from last week’s Adelaide tournament, whilst a couple of Frenchmen in Corentin Moutet and Arthur Rinderknecht, and a second Australian wildcard in Aleksandar Vukic all made it to the final eight. In the women’s, it was a USA-dominant feast with five of the eight quarter finalists from the nation. Third seed Coco Gauff led a quartet of unseeded players in Alison Riske, Madison Keys, Lauren Davis and Madison Brengle through to the next round, with Ana Konjuh‘s win over sixth seed Marketa Vondrousova the biggest upset of the day.
