French fancy fails as Argentine advances

ALTHOUGH things went to plan for most of the seeds overnight at the Olympics, everything did not go to plan for all as Ugo Humbert found out the hard way after the 10th seed went down to Argentine Francisco Cerundolo 7-5. 6-7, 7-5.

In a match that lasted two hours and 44 minutes, the Argentine was really made to earn his win.

There were plenty of aces in the match (14 in total between the pair), but both players served three double faults each.

Although Cerundolo comfortably had the better first serve percentage, he only won six more points off the first serve than his French opponent.

Another crucial stat was the break point conversions, which saw Cerundolo convert three quarters of his, Humbert only converted one third of his.

Cerundolo’s next opponent is Casper Ruud, who was made to work for his win over Italian Andrea Vavassori but eventually prevailed in three sets.

Some other big names to pick up wins overnight were Stefanos Tsitsipas, Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic, which Djokovic emerging victorious from a much talked about battle with Rafael Nadal.

Meanwhile in the doubles it was not a good day for Aussie hopefuls Alexei Popyrin and Alex de Minaur, who were well beaten by fourth seeds Austin Krajicek and Rajeev Ram. The Americans now move on to face Brazilian pair Thiago Monteiro and Thiago Seyboth Wild, who beat Kazakh pair Alexander Bublik and Aleksandr Nedovyesov.
