Jabeur outclassed as big names continue to tumble
DAY four at the Australian Open continued to provide the shocks in the women’s draw, with a number of big names falling in the second round.
One of those to fall was sixth seed Ons Jabeur, who was completely outclassed by Mirra Andreeva, with the Russian winning 6-0, 6-2.
Double faults (Andreeva served the only one) and aces (they served two each) were not to blame for the one sided scoreline, but Andreeva did comfortably win several other categories.
She recorded four more winners than the Tunisian, and saved five break points compared to Jabeur’s 0. Jabeur’s unforced error count was also very high (24 compared to Andreeva’s 10).
Andreeva’s next opponent will be Diane Parry, after the Frenchwoman defeated Kamilla Rakhimova yesterday in straight sets.
Jabeur was not the only seed to fall yesterday, with Maria Sakkari, Leylah Fernandez, Elise Mertens and Caroline Garcia also falling.
However some seeds did progress, with Beatriz Haddad Maia, Aryna Sabalenka, Coco Gauff, Barbora Krejcikova and Lesia Tsurenko all winning.
