Korda blows away Davidovich Fokina in huge Miami win
AMERICAN Sebastian Korda has obliterated Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the opening round of the ATP Miami Masters 1000 on the way to the Round of 64. The local hope only dropped two games in 71 minutes to storm to a 6-1 6-1 victory as he eyes off entering the Top 30 for the first time.
“I played some long points. It was pretty warm out there so I am super happy to get through,” Korda said post-match. “I made him run around a bit. “I think I did a good job on that today and am super happy with the way I played.”
Korda’s success in Miami is nothing new, with the Miami Open being a huge turning point in his career last year. He made his debut at the event ranked 87th in the world, and reaching the final eight there. On his way to the quarter finals he rolled seeds Fabio Fognini, Aslan Karatsev and Diego Schwartzman, and will need to defeat another seed in 32nd seed Albert Ramos-Vinolas tomorrow for a chance to reach the Round of 32.
“I made the quarter-finals last year and ever since I was a little kid I came to this tournament,” Korda said. “Now to be able to be here and compete myself, I think little Sebi would be very happy.”
Korda won 61 and 65 per cent of his first serve points, and completely took Davidovich Fokina to task upon his return. The Spaniard only won a shocking four of 18 points off his second serve, and his first serve was not much better, winning at a 44 per cent clip. Remarkably the world number 42 broke Korda once from four chances, whilst the American achieved the feat six times from nine opportunities.
