Popyrin powers past Wawrinka to set up Zverev tie

ALEXEI Popyrin continues to carry the hopes of Australian singles gold at the Olympics, defeating Stan Wawrinka in straight sets to progress to the third round of the men’s singles.

After winning the first set 6-4 in 35 minutes, Popyrin had a harder time winning the second set but still won it 7-5 to wrap the match up in under an hour and a half.

Although Popyrin served three more double faults than Wawrinka did, he also recorded more than double the number of service winners than the Swiss veteran did. Popyrin was also dominant off the forehand, recording nine more forehand winners than Wawrinka.

Interestingly though, Wawrinka recorded less errors, both forced (24 compared to 30) and unforced (eight compared to 12).

Popyrin has a huge challenge ahead of him in the next round, with third seed Alexander Zverev his next opponent.

Other winners overnight included Taylor Fritz, Felix Auger-Aliassime and Daniil Medvedev.

Meanwhile in the doubles it was a good day again for Aussies Matthew Ebden and John Peers, who won through to the third round after defeating Spanish pair Pablo Carreno Busta and Marcel Granollers.

Dominik Koepfer and Jan-Lennard Struff await the Aussie pair in the next round, after the Germans beat Portugal’s Nuno Borges and Francisco Cabral to progress to the next round.
