Sinner strikes for maiden ATP Finals title
WORLD number one Jannik Sinner has had quite the year, rising to top spot in the world rankings, winning the Australian and US Opens among eight titles, recording more victories than any other player on the ATP Tour, and now becoming an ATP Finals champion.
The Italian joined Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer as the only players to successfully win the Australian Open, US Open and ATP Finals in a single season. The youngest player of the trio to achieve the feat, Sinner also won in Rotterdam, Miami, Halle, Cincinnati and Shanghai, finishing off 2024 with a trophy in his home country.
Overnight, he beat the same man he bested at Flushing Meadows in American Taylor Fritz. Having not dropped a set all tournament, the world number one continued that them, defeating Fritz for the second time in Turin, thanks to a 6-4 6-4 triumph in the final.
He also became the first Italian champion in the tournament’s history, and won a whopping 92.1 per cent (70-6) of his matches in 2024, with three of his six losses coming against world number three, Carlos Alcaraz.
Sinner won 83 per cent of his first serve points in the final, serving 14 aces to eight and saving the only break point he faced. The Italian broke twice from six chances and was always on top in the match, claiming his 50th hard court victory in 2024.
“It’s amazing, it’s my first title in Italy and it means so much to me,” Sinner said post-match. “It’s something very special. I just tried to understand what works best for each opponent, trying to play my best possible tennis. That was the key.
“It was a very high level tournament from my side. At times, I couldn’t have played better, so I am very happy.”
Sinner became the first player since Ivan Lendl in 38 years to not drop a set throughout the ATP Finals, and in lifting the trophy, also became the first player born in the 21st century to mark off the achievement.
Incredibly despite his ATP Tour season being done, the world number one will suit up for Italy when the Davis Cup gets underway later this week. Italy will play Argentina on Thursday for a spot in the semi-finals and the chance to defend its title.
