Jelena Ostapenko‘s giant-killing streak continued in the quarter finals at Doha, taking out fifth see Garbine Muguruza to make it nine consecutive victories on the trot, of which seven were Grand Slam winners. The experienced Spaniard was just the latest one to fall to Ostapenko, with the 15th seed Estonian now facing fourth seed Anett Kontaveit – the last player to beat her back in the St Petersburg semi-finals on February 13. Kontaveit was equally as impressive in defeating Ons Jabeur 6-4 6-1 and is just two wins away from a second title in three weeks.

“I knew it was going to be a tough match against her,” Ostapenko said post-match. “But I really knew I also have to be aggressive and take time away from her, which I think I did pretty well, and I was dictating the game today.

“Of course it’s great to have so many matches winning, but the tournament is still not over. I hope I can keep winning here still in Doha. I’m just working on some things and getting more confident, and I think it’s going to help my game.”

In St Petersburg, Kontaveit defeated Maria Sakkari, whom she could still face in the final after the Greek star took out 14th seed Coco Gauff, Sakkari proved too good for the American teen, winning 6-3 6-3 to set up a clash with Polish second seed Iga Swiatek. The Roland Garros champion Swiatek knocked off top seed Aryna Sabalenka in straight sets to advance to the semis.
